Attorney General’s Office Investigates The Death of a Bicyclist Involving a Police Vehicle

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – The Attorney General’s Office is overseeing an investigation regarding a motor vehicle accident involving a police vehicle and a bicyclist that occurred on June 18th in Atlantic City. As a result of the seriousness of his injuries, the cyclist was taken to the hospital, where he died a week later.

Everett Stern, 63, of Atlantic City, N.J has been identified as the decedent.

According to the preliminary investigation, the collision occurred around 8:30 p.m. as a uniformed officer of the Atlantic City Police Department was driving northbound on Arkansas Avenue responding to a regular call for service, with no lights or siren engaged. Mr. Stern was riding his bicycle eastward on Arctic Avenue when it collided with the police vehicle’s driver’s side. The police summoned emergency medical assistance and began treating Mr. Stern right away. Mr. Stern was rushed to the Atlanticare Regional Medical Center by an ambulance, where he died on June 25.

This investigation is being carried out in accordance with Attorney General Directive 2019-4, which enacts the statutory requirement that the Attorney General’s Office must investigate any death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the decedent is in custody.

The inquiry is still underway, and no other details are available at this time. According to a press release issued by the AOG’s office.
